RIO DE JANEIRO - Penjaga gol dan kapten Flamengo, Bruno Souza menyerah diri kepada pihak polis ekoran menjadi suspek utama dalam kes pembunuhan kejam bekas kekasihnya, Eliza Samudio.
Insiden itu ternyata mengejutkan ramai pemerhati bola sepak selepas pihak polis mengadakan sidang media pada Khamis lalu mengaitkan pembabitan Souza di dalam kes berkenaan.
''Seorang pemain idola seperti Bruno, yang bermain bersama sebuah kelab besar boleh bersikap seperti syaitan kepada wanita.
''Jenayah ini telah dirancang dengan teliti. Kami boleh menyimpulkan Eliza sebenarnya telah mati,'' kata ketua Pesuruhjaya Polis Edson Moreira, Minas Gerais yang mengetuai siasatan tersebut.
Mayat Samudio masih belum dijumpai, namun sepupu Bruno berusia 17 tahun, dapat membantu siasatan selepas mendakwa mempunyai beberapa bukti kukuh yang dapat dikaitkan dengan penjaga gol itu.
Difahamkan, Bruno pernah dilihat berada berhampiran dengan kawasan rumah Samudio di Belo Horizonte pada bulan lau sebelum dibunuh dan mayatnya dipercayai dipotong kepada beberapa bahagian sebelum diberikan kepada anjing untuk menghilangkan bukti jenayah. - AFP

An Argentinean vacation turned into the inspiration of a lifetime for Tom's Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie. The 30-year-old entrepreneur, and former "Amazing Race" contestant, watched children running around the rocky terrain barefoot.
"I came across a lot of children that had cuts and scrapes and infections on their feet," he said. "At the same time, I noticed that a lot of the Argentine polo players and their girlfriends were wearing this very stylish, canvas slip-on shoe, called the alpargata."
Using the framework of the alpargatas, Mycoskie redesigned the shoe to form a collection of stylish, trendy footwear, and launched Tom's Shoes, that sells online and in department stores worldwide.
For every sale, Tom's Shoes donates one pair to a child abroad. In an emotional return to the region, Mycoskie and his staff handed out more than 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in some of the poorest villages in the region.
The need for footwear has implications well beyond that of comfort. Many of these children are denied an education if they do not have a proper school uniform or footwear.
"We find that by giving children shoes, we give them a new chance at life, not only protecting them of diseases, but also giving them the first chance to go to school, and get a proper education," said Mycoskie.
Dr. Paul Wise, the Richard E. Behrman professor of child health and society at Stanford University, says proper shoes and healthy feet are important in developing countries, where personal mobility can be key to survival.
He adds that mobility is important, because many families depend on their children to contribute to the household income.
"Even though almost all countries have laws that kids must stay in school," said Wise, "in Bolivia, Haiti, Nicaragua and many other countries in the Western Hemisphere, a large number of children begin working after the third grade."
Mycoskie's efforts to make a difference extend far beyond that of South America.
Next week, he will travel with a team of 50 volunteers to South Africa, where they will deliver more than 50,000 pairs of shoes.
"As long as we continue to make cool, hip shoes that people are buying, we can continue to give the children shoes," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR 12 Julai - Ops Soga yang dilancarkan Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) selama sebulan bermula 11 Jun lalu sehingga berakhirnya Kejohanan Piala Dunia 2010 semalam, berjaya menumpaskan kegiatan pertaruhan bola sepak bernilai RM419.2 juta.
Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan Jenayahnya, Datuk Seri Mohd. Bakri Mohd. Zinin berkata, Malaysia juga menjadi negara kedua tertinggi terlibat dari segi nilai pertaruhan, serbuan dan tangkapan di kalangan enam buah negara Asia Pasifik, selepas Thailand.
Katanya, negara-negara lain yang menyertai Kumpulan Asia Pasifik Dalam Jenayah Terancang di Asia bagi memantau kegiatan judi bola itu adalah Singapura, Hong Kong, China dan Macau.
Mohd Bakri turut memberitahu, pihaknya sedang memantau pergerakan empat ahli perniagaan berstatus Datuk yang dipercayai dalang dalam semua sindiket perjudian bola di negara ini.
Katanya, kesemua mereka yang berusia lewat 40-an itu dikatakan telah melarikan diri ke negara jiran sebelum Ops Soga dimulakan.
"Kita percaya mereka (suspek) pasti akan pulang ke Malaysia semula kerana pasport digunakan mempunyai tarikh had berada di luar negara.
"Selain itu, kita turut memantau pergerakan mereka melalui ahli keluarga yang masih berada di dalam negara," katanya pada sidang akhbar di Bukit Aman di sini hari ini.
Pada 21 Jun lalu, Mohd. Bakri mendedahkan lebih tujuh orang kenamaan yang dipercayai terlibat dalam sindiket judi bola sepak Piala Dunia 2010 dikesan telah melarikan diri ke luar negara.
Berikutan itu, PDRM telah menjalinkan kerjasama risikan dengan polis antarabangsa (Interpol) sejak April lalu dan percaya akan dapat mengesan individu terbabit.
Tambah Mohd. Bakri, dalam tempoh sebulan sepanjang kejohanan bola sepak 2010 itu, pihaknya telah membuat 270 serbuan dan membuka 151 kertas siasatan berhubung perkara tersebut.
Katanya, daripada jumlah tersebut sebanyak 227 tangkapan dibuat pihaknya melibatkan 209 lelaki dan tujuh perempuan tempatan, seorang lelaki serta 10 wanita Indonesia.
Beliau berkata, kesemua mereka yang terdiri daripada bookie, kaki judi dan ejen-ejen ah long berusia 15 hingga 73 tahun itu akan disiasat mengikut Seksyen 6 (3) Akta Pertaruhan 1953.
"Antara barang yang dirampas, komputer (78), komputer riba (69), modem (62), telefon bimbit (178), mesin faks (12), kalkulator (48) dan kad jalur lebar wayarles (26).
"Turut dirampas kertas yang dicatatkan pertaruhan 450 keping dan wang tunai berjumlah RM99,266," katanya.
Mohd. Bakri menambah, sebanyak 33 tangkapan kegiatan judi bola itu telah diserahkan kepada bahagian unit Akta Penggubahan Wang Haram (AMLA).

In the new eco-conscious urban world, cycling to work is a growing trend. Cities are promoting this form of healthy commute by painting bike lanes across towns, and Paris has become the latest city to stock streets with free "public" bicycles for commuters to pick up and drop off at will.
But in Africa, biking is not just an alternative mode of transportation, an ethical fad or even a hobby. On a continent where a car often costs over 10 times the average annual income, in rural areas owning a bicycle can make the difference between earning a living or not, getting an education or not, and receiving medical care or dying.
A few independent charities, based in the United States, Canada, England and even as far as Australia, are responding to that vital need by providing bikes to some of the poorest people of the world.
